Words to Contemplate

George Carlin’s wife died early in 2008 and George followed her, dying in July 2008. It is ironic George Carlin – comedian of the 70’s and 80’s – could write something so very eloquent and so very appropriate. An observation by George Carlin:

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life. We’ve added years to life not life to years. We’ve been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We’ve done larger things, but not better things.

We’ve cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We’ve conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We’ve learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete.

Remember to spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.

Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.

Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn’t cost a cent.

Remember, to say, ‘I love you’ to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.

Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.

Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

And always remember, life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by those moments that take our breath away.

George Carlin

47 – Searching for Answers – Epilog: The Day After

Joe woke up feeling refreshed. Tom was already scurrying around getting ready to leave for Ann’s place. Their wedding date was creeping up on them and the need to finalize everything was taking on a bit of importance before the big day arrived. Sarah picked up her phone after hearing it ring and seeing Joe’s name on the screen. A sweet sounding “good morning” were the words that hit Joe’s ear as Sarah added; and how did you sleep after you got home last night? I slept great, how about you, replied Joe as Sarah could hear him yawning. Sarah caught herself following suite with Joe with a yawn of her own as she forced out; well it took me a little while to settle in but once I fell asleep it was great. I think it was because of the excitement of last night and how everybody reacted to what we told them. I felt really good about it and Carol; well I hope she calls me. I am sure she will Sarah. She was pretty serious last night. I think we told her more than she thought she would hear. So are you ready to head to Denver to see Dr. Bob? When do you think we should leave? Let’s leave early enough, replied Sarah. We’re going to meet him at 2:30, so we need an hour, plus traffic and maybe we could catch lunch on the way. Sounds good, replied an energetic Joe. I’ll pick you up around 11:30. Does that work for you? Yup, I’ll be ready was the reply that sent Joe’s mind reeling as he thought about spending most of the day with Sarah.

As Joe and Sarah sat in Joe car outside of Sarah’s house, they looked at each other with expressions on their faces that told a story that neither had to put into words. What is the meaning of all this? What is the importance of what Dr. Bob wants to tell them? How will they handle the intimacy of their relationship while holding true to their personal commitments to each other and God? How do the experiences of Tom and Ann fit into everything? How is Carol connected and will she and Pete and the rest of the gang be part of God’s plan as it becomes revealed to them? Both Joe and Sarah sat silently looking out the windshield as the wind moved the leaves of the tree in Sarah’s front yard back and forth. A gentle breeze was filtering through Sarah’s window moving gently across towards Joe carrying the soft scent of Sarah’s perfume that Joe had come to love as it made its way past him and return back into the outside air. Joe slid his hand across the seat until it found Sarah’s as they sat silently not wanting to break the beautifully intense feelings that filled the car. Sarah silently unsnapped her seatbelt and slid over towards Joe. Joe raised his arm as Sarah nudged under it. Still not a word was spoke as they embraced each other settling into a passionate kiss. Time finally stood still as Joe and Sarah let their minds stop and allow the silence to once again take over. Only time will allow the story behind Joe and Sarah’s life to unfold. Just what will be the next discoveries on their journey? Will the dreams that brought them together continue to drive their future?
