When you need protection where does one turn?
During World War 2, a soldier was separated from his unit on an island. The fighting had been intense, and in the smoke and the crossfire he had lost touch with his comrades. Alone in the jungle, he could hear enemy soldiers coming in his direction. Scrambling for cover, he found his way up a high ridge to several small caves in the rock. Quickly he crawled inside one of the caves. Although safe for the moment, he realized that once the enemy soldiers looking for him swept up the ridge, they would quickly search all the caves and he would be killed.
As he waited, he prayed, “Lord, please spare my life. Whatever will happen, I love you and trust you. Amen.” After praying, he lay quietly listening to the enemy begin to draw close. He thought, “Well, I guess the Lord isn’t going to help me out of…

Joe had just finished cleaning up the dishes while Tom sat and talked about everything that was happening when the doorbell rang. Joe walked to the door and quickly opened it inviting everyone in. Sorry I don’t have a lot of extra chairs. Feel free to find a place and try to make yourselves comfortable. Anyone want anything to drink? I have coffee, tea, or water? I also have some beer if anyone would like one. I might also have some white wine in the fridge. Everyone quickly said that they were fine and that they just wanted to check in on Tom to see how he was doing now that he was out of the hospital.
Ann walked over and sat down on the floor next to Tom who was sitting in Joe’s favorite chair. Well I’m doing pretty well replied Tom when Ann asked how he was feeling. I just had the best meal I have had in weeks and I’m out of the hospital, so I guess all is good. Looking around the room Tom smiled as he said; I’m really happy you all stopped by to check on me. Joe is taking good care of me and I can’t tell you how great it feels to be out of the hospital. The next several minutes passed as everyone was exchanging thoughts on everything that had happened when Tom’s dad spoke up and said; Tom your mom and I have to get back to Michigan day after tomorrow. I’ve been able to stay ahead of things at the shop by working remotely over the internet and making a few phone calls. But things are happening that need my presence now. Dad, it has been so great that you have been able spend this much time with me replied Tom. I am on the mend and everything is going to be ok. Greg spoke up and told Randy that they would keep an eye on Tom as he looked over at Tom and gave him a sly looking smile. Yes we will keep an eye on him added Sandy as they all began to laugh.
Tom looked down at Ann, bent down and said I want to tell them right now if you agree. Looking up she said ok. Well Ann and I have something to tell you about before you leave. I asked Ann to marry me and – Ann quickly stood up and said and I told him yes! Greg already had a big smile across his face as Sandy said I am so happy for both of you. Jill and Randy walked over to Tom and Ann giving them a hug showing how delighted they were for both of them. Welcome to our family Ann, added Jill. This is such great news and I am really excited for both of you. Sandy looked at Greg and said you knew about this didn’t you? Well just a little replied Greg. Tom talked to me about it a couple days ago and I knew I had to keep it a secret until they were ready to tell everyone. The chatter in the room took over the conversation as they all talked about how great it would be and how happy they were. Sandy interrupted the ongoing chatter when she walked over to Tom, bend down giving him an emotional hug as a tear rolled down her cheek as she told him just how happy she was for them and then added; you two are going to be great for each other. I am beyond excitement!
Sandy looked over at Ann and asked; have you two set a date yet? Well we are going to talk to Pastor Dan about that and see if he would marry us. We really haven’t talked much about when, added Tom. But we want to do it sooner than later. Sandy looked back over at her daughter Ann with a look that told Ann she knew more than she had been told. It was a look of love that only a mother and a daughter have. It was something very special and Ann could feel it. Everyone continued talking and making some jokes about how long they had dated and it was about time they tied the knot.
Joe stood off to the side taking it all in and thinking about how great it would be if it was he and Sarah that were making the announcement. He wanted Sarah to be there with him so bad that he walked into the kitchen, picked up his phone and called her. She picked right up and quickly asked if everything was alright. Yes, replied Joe. I wish you were here Sarah. Tom and Ann just told their parents they were getting married. Everyone is so happy. You should have seen the look on everyone’s face. Except for Greg who was already smiling before Tom got it out. I wish I could have been there Joe. I am really happy for them. They are going to be great together. Did they tell them about the baby yet? Not yet.
Sarah and Joe went silent for a couple seconds as both were wondering how everyone would take the news about the baby when Joe’s let his thoughts switch to his dream. Sarah, you won’t believe it but I had another dream. You got to be kidding me Joe. Are you ok? Yes, it was different. It was not like before. Nothing was trying to kill me and there were no dinosaurs. All I did was close my eyes and before I knew it, I was behind this large boulder. It was dark but I could see some light coming from the other side of the boulder. It was a little scary as I looked around the other side to see where the light was coming from. I watched as people were laughing as they walked towards an opening in the ground that looked like a big fire pit. It looked very pleasant as I could see the flicker of the flames bouncing around but I couldn’t see the fire. It looked inviting but as people walked up and started into it all I could hear was screams of terror and then they would stop. I tried to help but every time I tried I ran into a fence that knocked me down. They would appear so happy and before they knew it they were screaming and then they stopped. I tried several times to stop different people. One of them walked right past me as if I wasn’t there. The fence didn’t stop him. It was as if it wasn’t there. But when I tried to run after him I hit it again and fell backwards. That is when it stopped and I woke up.
Both Sarah and Joe stopped talking for a while. Neither of them realized that the other wasn’t talking. Joe finally broke the silence when he asked Sarah if he could come over and see her tomorrow if Tom was up to a short stay alone. I got one better Joe. I will pick up some lunch and stop by around noon. I will bring some for Tom too. Tell Ann and see if she would like to join us. Tomorrow is Saturday so she should be free and we will have some more time to talk then. Ok. I will see you around noon. Call me if something changes. I will Joe. Sarah, I love you. And I love you too Joe and no more dreams. Think good thoughts Joe. I’ll just try to dream about you Sarah. That should work! Sarah was grinning as she said goodbye, but Joe would never know.
Tom and Ann were working up the nerve to break the news about the baby to their parents when they heard the door open. Joe walked in which broke the silence. Both Tom and Ann had been trying to find a way to slide into the subject but someone always went off in a different direction which seemed to sidetrack the breaking news. Ann would look at Tom and they would just shrug their shoulders and smile. Joe, I’m glad you came back in. We have some new news we need to tell everyone. Joe was still thinking about his talk with Sarah and could only reply; what news? Oh, oh that news! Yes replied Ann. Ok, what are you two talking about replied Ann’s mom Sandy. Mom, we have a little additional news and we hope you guys will be happy about it. You guys are going to be grandparents. We are going to have a baby boy. The room went silent until Sandy spoke up and said; Ann you know how much we love you guys and I can’t wait to be a grandma. The other three expectant grandparents chimed in letting Tom and Ann know how happy they were. What’s on your mind mom, inquired Ann. You have this big smile that usually means… Well I have kind of known or at least had a suspicion about this for the last couple weeks. I wasn’t sure but I just had a feeling that just maybe this was what was making you sick. I knew you would tell us when you were ready if you were. So how long have you known? When are you due? I had no idea until a couple days before Tom woke up, replied Ann. Jill got up and walked over to Ann and put her arms around her and told her how much she loved her and that she couldn’t be happier. You are going to be a great daughter and a great mom. Then she looked at Tom and with a big smile said; I am so happy. It wasn’t long and the emotional tension in the room was gone. Everyone was smiling and the joy in the atmosphere made both Ann and Tom know everything was going to be alright.
Joe broke the emotional high when he spoke up saying; Ann, Sarah asked me to see if you would like to join the three of us for lunch tomorrow. Sarah is fixing something up and was coming over around noon. Sound great replied Ann. Before long everyone was saying goodbye, hugs for everyone and the four parents made their way out the door. Ann held back just a little so she could say goodbye to Tom. As soon as the door closed she leaned over Tom and gave him a hug adding the words I love you as she kissed him goodnight. I will see you tomorrow. I am so glad that is over with. Now I know things are going to be ok.
Ann pulled the door closed behind her as she made her way towards her car. The other four were standing there waiting for her as she walked up to them. Just as they were about to get in their cars Ann’s mom stopped and said: what do you mean a boy? How do you know that already? Well it is a little bit of a long story mom. Actually Tom was the first to know. How would Tom know before you? Well we need Tom here for that story. Sorry to leave you hanging but… Ann jumped into the car and pulled the door shut, fired up the engine and was headed towards home before what she had said sank into everyone’s mind. Oh boy this is going to be a story, Ann thought to herself.
Tom looked around as they walked into Joe’s apartment. Tom could see Joe had made some changes and was searching for words to express just how grateful he was for everything he had done for him when Joe looked over and said; Tom you look exhausted. I don’t want to sound like your parents but, it’s been a big day for you and you have visitors coming over to see you after a while. Maybe you should lie down for a little nap and I will get somethings rounded around for dinner. We should try to eat before Ann and everyone arrive. Sarah said your parents and Ann and her parents were going out for dinner and that they were planning to stop by for a little while to see how you are doing. They know this was a big change for you and didn’t want to slow your progress by coming early and staying too late. That sounds great Joe. Sorry I can’t be much help yet. I’m sure I will feel better tomorrow. Every day that goes by I know I am on the mend. But, I think I will take you up on the nap idea. I feel pretty tired and I really want to be ready before Ann gets here. I really want to tell our parents about everything.
Tom made his way to his new temporary bedroom and carefully sat on the edge of the bed and looked out the window. All he could think about was how great it felt to be out of the hospital. He could see a butterfly hovering just outside the window, the grass was green and the sky was blue. Somehow it looked so much better out Joe’s window than it had out of his hospital room window. Carefully he leaned back and shortly after his head hit the pillow he was getting some much needed sleep.
Joe was working around the kitchen and took out a couple of steaks that he had picked up the day before. He planned to grill them for dinner but wanted them to warm a little before he got started. Steak is always better when you grill it after it has acclimated to ambient temperature than right out of the refrigerator he told himself. Opening the refrigerator he pulled out the meat and as he shuffled some of the food around he spotted one of his favorite IPA’s and decided it was time to sit back for a few minutes and relax while the steaks warmed a bit. Sitting the steaks on a plate on the cupboard, he cracked open the beer and walked over to his favor reclining chair and sat down, pushed it back and took a slow cold sip. Joe was letting his mind recall everything that had happened over the last weeks when he remembered the story Tom had told him about when he had died. Joe closed his eyes as he tried to recall every detail of the story. Tom said there was this bright light and then he met his grandfather and as they were talking…
Joe raised his head to see a large boulder staring down at him. Taking one hand he wiped some dust from the side of his face and shook his head wondering where he was. Listening closely he could hear what sounded like voices coming from the other side of the massive stone that towered over him like a giant creature. It was dark but the longer he listened clearer sounds got. It was like people were talking and laughing then he heard a scream that sounded like someone being hurt. Then the scream went silent. Joe got on his hands and knees carefully making his way around the boulder and could see what look like a fire pit in a distance that had been dug out of the ground. He couldn’t see the flames just the light that appeared to bounce up against the dark sky. They looked inviting to the eye. Joe carefully stood up trying to see if someone was around. He looked back at the fire pit and still couldn’t see the flames only the light. The light was enticing him to come closer. As Joe started to move he looked to the other side and spotted a man and a women walking towards the flickering light. Joe quickly stooped down to avoid being discovered. As he watched the couple they appeared to be happy and not aware of the open pit they were approaching. They were looking in the sky talking about the beautiful lights and before Joe could say anything they just walked off the edge and into the pit. He heard them scream as they disappeared. The screams seemed to fade away as if the pit was deep. Joe jumped up and ran forward to see if he could help and as he approached the edge he ran into a fence that he hadn’t been able to see which stopped him dead in his tracks and knocked him to the ground. The sounds stopped as he sat wondering what he could have done to save the couple that he assumed was seriously hurt. Maybe they died in what looks like a simple fire pit Joe told himself. Looking through the fence he could hear what sounded like a big party going on but couldn’t see anything. Then he spotted someone walking out of the tree line towards the edge again as if they had no idea what was going to happen. It was like the fire pit was attracting them but they were oblivious to it. Joe started to shout but as the man looked over at Joe he walked straight off the edge and Joe could hear his fading scream for help. Then it stopped. Joe jumped to his feet and started to work his way around to the opposite side. Joe again heard laughter coming from a distance but it was coming from the other side of the fire pit where he had just been. The voices continued to get louder as they approached. Joe turned back wanting to stop them and as he started to move he hit the fence and fell backwards hitting the ground harder than the first time. Looking up he started to yell at them. But as the group of five looked up they walked off the edge and again Joe could hear the screaming. Then it stopped. Then he heard someone approaching from behind him and turned to see a young man about his age. He stopped just as he reached the edge of the tree line and was looking into the sky. Joe thought he could see a smile on his face as he inched his way towards the pit. Joe told him to stop but he continued to laugh and started walking quickly forward as if Joe was not there. As he walked past Joe making his way towards the enticing light, Joe reached out to grab his shoulder but missed. The man was walking straight forward into the opening in the ground. Joe lunged and the fence appeared out of nowhere and knocked Joe to the ground again. Joe went silent on the ground, closed his eyes as tight as he could as he could still hear the screams from the man that he had tried to save. Then they stopped.
Joe rolled over, picked himself up and rubbed his eyes. Once he opened them he realized he was looking out the window of his apartment staring at the sun as it was beginning to settle behind the big tree. Sweat was running off Joe’s forehead when he heard Tom shout from the other room asking if everything was alright. Yes, replied Joe as he was trying to gain his composure. Joe sat down in his chair trying to grasp what he assumed was another dream. So when are we going to eat, shouted Tom. I will start up the grill and things should be ready in the next half hour replied Joe as he continued trying to comprehend what had just happened.
Before long the two of them were sitting at the table finishing up what was left of the steak. Tom looked over at Joe and told him how nice it was to be eating someplace other than the hospital adding that they don’t serve food like this there. Tom became a little more serious as he could see Joe had something on his mind. Even though they were talking and laughing a little during dinner Tom could feel the presence of something deeper going on with Joe. You have been pretty quiet Joe. You look like you have something pretty heavy on your mind. Care to share it? Joe was almost thankful Tom had opened the door for him. Tom, you aren’t going to believe it. But I had another dream and… You had what Tom quickly interjected as he was waiting for Joe to continue? Tom, I had another dream! Was it about dinosaurs again quizzed Tom? No, it was totally different. I don’t get it Tom. I haven’t had any crazy dreams like this since Sarah and I dug into the issue of creation and evolution. That was when I made my decision to accept Jesus as the creator. I don’t know what this dream means. I just know that the last dreams sent me on a quest to find answers. Now even though I can remember ever detail of this dream I have no idea what it is trying to tell me. It’s craze and it was a terrible dream. But we don’t have time to talk about the details of it now. I can tell you later. We need to get ready for your visitors. They should be here any time.
